As many of you know, we had a break in shortly after we moved to the village of Shila. We have taken som steps to prevent this in the future. The local officer in the village highly encouraged us to get a guard dog. He said that it is normal for most village homes to have a guard dog on the property,  and that we should get one soon.

So we followed his advice and got a Caucasian Mountain Dog. They are not common breed in America, but are popular  in Russia and eastern Europe, and are commonly employed as guard dogs. They are a shepherding breed, that means that they will both protect our family (their flock) and the protect the territory.


In addition to this, we also bought a insurance policy that protects against theft and fire.

V.B.S. Preparations

Tomorrow we will kick off our first day of Vacation Bible School. We are planning to hold four different V.B.S. campaigns in four different locations. Tomorrow starts the first of these campaigns in the city. Please pray that these will go well. We have been very busy with all the preparations that go into such a program. To fit in with our medieval theme, we were able to transform the church auditorium into a castle. We also made the props so that they can be folded up and taken out to the villages for the village programs. We have a variety  of games planned for the children ending with a medieval carnival. That said, in addition to building the castle props, we needed to also build a variety of games. It has been a lot of work, but it will be well worth it to have people sit under the teaching of the Gospel. Please pray for us throughout the weeks to come. Thank you for praying for Matt and me as we traveled back to Vanavara on the winter road. We made it back safely, Praise the Lord! Matt and I drove straight through, trading off driving, so that the other could rest. Considering the conditions of the winter road, we made pretty good time. The road was clearly melting. We drove through a lot of mud and slush, but underneath the mud and slush, the ground was still frozen solid. (In the warmer weather, much of the road is marshland, and only a few specially designed vehicles can make it through.) We are glad to be back. Thank you for your prayers.

Documents, Documents and more Documents

A big part of serving in a foreign country is staying on top of documents. Documents are not the most exciting part of the ministry, but an important part. This has certainly been true lately, as we have had a lot of document work that needed completed. One of the more important documents was Lilianna’s residency that needed to be renewed. The extension process takes a minimum of two months to be approved. Once approved, we flew down to Krasnoyarsk to pick up the residency document. In addition to Lilianna’s residency extension, Cassie’s and Lilianna’s passports were soon to expire. For us, that means a trip to the embassy in Moscow. Since we already had to fly to Krasnoyarsk, it made sense to combine the two trips. We turned in everything that was needed for the new passports in Moscow and returned to Krasnoyarsk to pick up Lilianna’s residency extension.
